On the topic of the role of humor in political discussions, Dr. Seuss did a series of rather famous political cartoons during the time of World War II encouraging US involvement in the conflict. In his case, the use of humor was both appropriate and effective, provoking responses from the American public. This is one of my personal favorites. In case the image is too small to tell, that's Uncle Sam in the left bed.
